Persons with Depression are at an Increased Risk for Diabetes

A recent study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that individuals with Depression have a 37% increased risk of developing Type II Diabetes.

The association between depression and diabetes has long been suggested, but scientists were unclear whether having diabetes triggered the onset of depression or whether depression was an added risk factor for diabetes.  This analysis reviewed all existing literature and research to date on the relationship between the two diseases.

The finding indicates that health care practitioners screening for Type II diabetes should see the presence of depression as an added risk factor prompting more intensified screening.
