Pediatric Telepsychiatry Visits Improve Symptoms

Research shows that pediatric telepsychiatry visits can not only cut costs and reduce visits to the ER, but they also improve symptoms. This has been attributed to the fact that telepsychiatry can help young patients overcome the embarrassment or stigma of in-office visits.

Results from the survey study were presented at a Webinar press conference earlier this summer by the Internet Innovation Alliance (IIA) and Colorado Access, which is a coalition supporting access to healthcare for all Americans, including those in underserved and rural communities.

The results showed that after 2 years of participation in a telepsychiatry pilot program through the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas 60% of participating adolescents and children reported a significant decrease in their symptoms. ER visits were cut by half.  Moreover, the rate of children or adolescent patients not showing for their televisits was only 32%, which is significantly lower than the national no-show rate of 42%-72%.  In addition, 89% said telepsychiatry made it easier for their children to receive the care they needed by a specialist.

The study shows the benefits of using such technologies not only increases access to psychiatric care in underserved areas, but that it’s well-perceived among parents as well. Dr. Alexander Vo, the program leader and telemedicine expert at UTMB was pleased with the outcomes of the survey. “It’s accepted among patients, it’s cost effective and increases access to care, and it improves clinical outcomes...Also in-home telepsychiatry is coming on quite strong because of the value of privacy and a reduction of stigma.”
